Rather, it was a product of a vicious cycle that spiraled into its final form of trading humans. It was not certain if the Arab slave trade was the precursor to the West slave trade. Initially, the Arabs had the slave trade only as a supplement to their more lucrative commerce in Africa with Sudanese gold and other rare and exotic woods. The Arab slave trade however was not geared towards a full scale buying and selling of humans but rather only as a means to satisfy their domestic needs. The Europeans (later the Americans) found the slave trade to be profitable followed suit and made a full scale business out of it whose numbers of the slaves traded accounted to millions (historians dispute the actual numbers but they agreed that it accounted to millions). The slave trading was intensified especially when the plantations on the islands off the coast of Africa (Sao Tome, Principe, Cap Verde) were successfully e stablished. Also, when the New World (America) embarked on its plantation and mines of gold, copper, cocoa, sugar, corn, tobacco and coffee, the slave trade became a convenient source of forced labor. Suffice to say that the international trade during the 15th to 19th century was driven by the slave trade. The commodities that were traded were not only grown and attended by slaves, but the slaves themselves were also part of the commodities that were traded internationally. These centuries of trade slave, ten centuries of slave trade from the Muslim countries that spanned between ninth to ninenteenth century, four centuries of slave trade from Western countries that eclipsed the ten centuries of trade of the Muslim countries, had a widespread implication among the African countries. African countries bled from the forced raid and stripping of its human resource whose trade passed through all her possible routes from the Sahara, through the Red Sea, from the Indian Ocean ports and ac ross the Atlantic (Bokolo). â€Å"The figures, even where hotly disputed, make your head spin. Four million slaves exported via the Red Sea, another four million through the Swahili ports of the Indian Ocean, perhaps as many as nine million along the trans-Saharan caravan route, and eleven to twenty million (depending on the author) across the Atlantic Ocean† (Bokolo). The most obvious effect of slave trade among these African countries is non-development. The African countries being robbed of its able bodied human resource were not able to embark on the development of its agriculture which was a pre requisite towards industrialization (people has to eat first before they can industrialize). Instead, its human resource and best able bodied men and women were used to till the lands of their European and American counterparts and also manned the factories and mines that became the engine of growth in the Western world. While Europe and America prospered, the African source of l abor languished in poverty. The underdevelopment of African countries even lingered until today even if the slave trade already ended more than a century past. First Aid is thee to take immediate action in treating the wounded when on the battlefield or in a hostile zone. The true begining of the usage of First Aid in the United States started with the Revolutionary War. Around this time in history the United States position in medical knowledge and safty was extremly poor. During the war there where many men from the Colonial Army who died from wounds that were untreated. As the Colonial Army took casualties for untreated wounds they finally established military hospitals and required that a surgeon and two sugeon mates accompanied each regiment on the field. Although this may have helped a little, soldiers where still dying from dieseases such as pneumonia, dysentery and smallpox. It wasnt until General George Washington petitioned the Continental Congress to establish what he called the Hospital: a general medical corps for soldiers. This was set up to serve an Army of 20,000 with four surgeons, an apothecary, 20 surgeons mates, one clerk, a storekeeper and one nurse for every 10 patients. This was the first organized military medical facility established in the newly forming United States. Although they had the facility and the faculty, soliders where still dying at a high rate. Advancements in First Aid took place as time continued and as the militaey began to grow in numbers. The Civil War brought many moe advancements in First Aid such as the development of a ambulance corps. In the civil war times the military treated there wounded based on the likelyhood of survival because of supply shortages and lack of time needed to properly treat all the wounded. First Aid became availible directly on the battle field for the first time in the Civil War. This was a huge success during the war and has been used now in modern day military First Aid tactics. After the Civil War, there was a length of time with no war which slightly haulted advancements in military First Aid. Although there werent any wars there where other important events within that time that help imporve first aid in the military such as the birth of the American Red Cross, the ratification of the first Geneva Convention, military orders to teach basic first aid to soldiers. After the time of peace in the United States, America was at wa again and first aid only continued to imporve as technology advanced. World War I was the start of Army medical personal being assigned to word directly in the field. The advancements in the development of the ambulance was huge during the war.They provided not only first aid but a way to evacuate when needed. During WWI new technologies greatly improved Army first aid with things such as the portable X-ray, the antiseptics and inoculations. This helped bring the numbers of death down drasticlly. Also the increase of medical knowlege helped keep death numbes down as well with new medicines such as penicillin and antimalarials. Morphine also started being used to wounded soldiers to help ease their pain. Due to all of these medical advancements the likely-hood of death dropped 30% by the end of WWII First aid training is extremely important in the military. It is important to know how to treat the wounded and the sick as quickly and safely as possible. First aid has progressed into a tactical and complex division in the military today. People now enlist into the military primarily for first aid. Without first aid soliders who are abroad in other countries wouldnt be able to recieve proper care for wounds and disease at a quick pace. First aid allows soldiers to be taken care of on the front lines of the battlefield allowing them to stay overseas for minor injury instead of being shipped home for care. The in class article I have chosen is titled Not to Be Toyed With’: Drug Addiction, Bullying and Self-empowerment in Buffy the vampire Slayer by Rob Cover and it involves the fictional character, Willow, and her addiction to magic. The article shares several similarities with the peer reviewed article Battling Addictions in Dracula by Kristina Aikens, and â€Å"[I]s it dangerous? Alternative readings of â€Å"drugs† and â€Å"addiction† in Buffy the Vampire Slayer by Jo Latham. All three articles explain the drug references in vampire media albeit with different points and interpretations. They briefly explain what an addiction is and how it applies to that particular subject. But two articles in particular, Not to Be Toyed With and â€Å"[I]s it dangerous? † both mention the nega tive aspects of peer pressure and bullying and what effect it can have on someone’s psyche specifically on the character Willow.Both articles explain how Willow’s magical curiosity began to manifest into something darker through time. The more she used magic, the more she relied on it and the more she became reluctant to control herself. She also began to show signs of an addiction, including withdrawal. The articles differ from Not to Be Toyed With in the sense that they explain drug use using different examples. â€Å"[I]s it dangerous? † takes a more in depth look in how Willow’s addiction causes her to become more compulsive, and how her friendships begin to crumble the more she hurts others with her magic.The article states that â€Å"The show succeeds in depicting drug use and its consequences as a complex web of dynamic intra-action between personal agency and structural forms of social restraints. Magic is pharmAkon: poison and cure, and the dist inction arises from how it is used: for good or evil, productively or destructively. † It states that the show attempts to show that drugs aren’t entirely bad, but can be used constructively. It evens takes it a step further by comparing her to other drug abusers and the medical aspect of addictions.It mentions that there may be properties of magic that has universal effects that may result in addiction, not the magic itself. In Battling Addictions in Dracula, It doesn’t use magic as a metaphor for drugs, but it compares drug abusers to a vampire addicted to human blood, more specifically the war on drugs. It briefly mentions the various drugs and makes several references to vampire culture.
